Editor's note: This magnificent close-up of a Nymphaea alba flower was taken in mid eighties by my late father.
Water lilies (nymphaeaceae) and other aquatic plants were his great, passionate hobby. To cultivate them, he set up greenhouses and laboriously excavated a complex system of a dozen interconnected ponds.
He was rewarded by over 120 thriving varieties - more than what any commercial outlet or botanical garden anywhere in the world could boast! The location (Karlovec in Northern Moravia, Czech Republic) is now flooded by the Slezská Harta dam and all that remains of that period is a collection of photos of the aquatic plants.
Let this shot serve to keep his memory alive.
